Supertots works with Jabberjacks to support EYFS. Jabberjacks supports all the six areas of Learning and Development for The Early Years Foundation Stage.
Below you will find a few examples of the activities provided by Jabberjacks for Supertots and how they fit into the six areas of learning. Please bear in mind that every Jabberjacks session is different and that these are just a few examples chosen from many activities.
Also, in accordance with the EYFS, Jabberjacks “supports a rounded approach to child development” and does not attempt to deliver one area of development in isolation from the others. One Jabberjacks activity will support several areas of learning.
Each session begins with the Jabberjacks Hello Song. The leader greets each child individually and encourages them to respond if they feel confident enough. At the end the Goodbye Song is performed, the children are praised for their achievements and encouraged to say “goodbye” and “thank” you to the leader.
This large puppet has a two-sided face; one side happy and the other side sad. Along with the children Mr. Square performs the song “If you are happy and you know it” with each verse alternating between happy and sad actions, thus developing the children’s understanding of how facial expression and body language communicates meaning.
The magic box opens to reveal a large rod puppet. She is dressed like a princess with glitter and jewels which immediately captures the children’s attention. The leader encourages the children to observe that she is made up almost entirely of circles and asks them to point out where the circles are on her body. They then join in an action rhyme where they copy the puppet as she draws imaginary circles, in the air, round her face, on the floor and even on her tummy (Watch out that’s a bit tickley!)
During each session an interesting object or toy is brought out of the treasure box that will appeal to the children’s curiosity and will present some sort of tactile, visual, or auditory stimulus. For example a mechanical or musical toy or an object containing coloured liquids that move when it is tilted. The children are encouraged to share the toy around the circle taking turns to “investigate (it) using all their senses as appropriate”.
The children are each given a length of coloured ribbon. As the children dance freely with these, the leader will pick up on their ideas and further develop them, giving the children lots of praise and encouragement at the same time. Then in a more structured way the children will be asked to move with more control and coordination, perhaps walking along a ribbon laid straight on the floor, jumping over their ribbons, or joining with friends to make a maypole.
Each child is given an activity bag containing a teddy bear a blanket, a sponge a brush, a toothbrush and a bottle. In a structured way with a song, the children act out getting teddy ready for his day. Following this, older children then may suggest an activity for teddy and the group then act this out together.Remember, these are just a few samples chosen from a wide range of activities all of which involve original and stimulating equipment and ideas.
